Online Poetry Statistics: Readers, Streaming, and Digital Audiences

Key online poetry statistics covering digital reading, streaming, poetry websites, podcasts, subscriptions, and audience engagement.

Online poetry has a substantial digital audience, from people who read poems on websites to listeners who use streaming, podcasts, and audio archives. U.S. participation data provides context, while annual reports from major poetry organizations show how large online poetry platforms and programs have become.

How many people read or listen to poetry online?

The National Endowment for the Arts reported that 4.8% of U.S. adults listened to poetry through broadcasts, recordings, or web streaming in 2022. That represented 11.8 million people. This is the clearest supplied measure of poetry listening through channels that include online streaming, although it combines web streaming with broadcasts and recordings rather than isolating website use.

Reading poetry was more common than listening through those channels. The NEA reported that 9.2% of U.S. adults read poetry in 2022. An earlier NEA blog report placed the adult poetry-reading rate at 11.7% in 2017 and 6.7% in 2012. These figures cover U.S. adults and should be compared with their stated survey years; they are not measurements of a single continuous online audience.

Digital media is part of a broader arts-consumption pattern. In an NEA 2023 press release, 82% of respondents said they watched or listened to arts activities through digital media between 2021 and 2022. The same release reported that 53% of U.S. adults read literature and/or books of some kind in 2022, while 48.5% read at least one book in print or electronically. Novels or short stories were read by 37.6% of U.S. adults in that year.

The available national figures show both the reach and the limits of online poetry statistics. Poetry listening is measured as part of a combined media category, while reading statistics describe poetry participation without identifying whether the poem was read in print, on a website, in an app, or elsewhere.

Poetry participation by age and background

The NEA blog’s 2023 reporting provides comparisons for selected demographic groups. Among U.S. adults ages 18–24, 17.5% read poetry in 2017, compared with 9.0% in 2022. For adults ages 25–34, the corresponding figures were 12.3% in 2017 and 11.9% in 2022. Among adults ages 75 and older, 11.0% read poetry in 2017 and 7.1% did so in 2022.

The supplied figures also show differences by racial and ethnic group. African American adults had a poetry-reading rate of 15.3% in 2017 and 8.3% in 2022. Hispanic adults had rates of 9.7% in 2017 and 6.5% in 2022. These are U.S. adult participation measurements for the named years, not forecasts or estimates of current online behavior.

Listening rates in 2022 varied across the groups and categories reported by the NEA. The rate was 6.2% for U.S. adults ages 18–24, 7.1% for adults ages 25–34, and 7.6% for African American adults. By education, 6.3% of adults with only some high school education listened to poetry, compared with 2.0% of adults who only finished grammar school and 3.3% of adults who graduated from high school. By location, 5.1% of urban adults and 2.8% of rural adults listened to poetry.

These comparisons are useful for describing participation, but they do not establish why rates differed or how much of any group’s activity occurred online.

What major poetry websites report

The Academy of American Poets reported a large worldwide audience for Poets.org. In 2021, the organization said 18,015,092 individuals worldwide had read poems on the site during the last year reported. The Academy also said Poets.org traffic rose 10% versus the same pre-pandemic period in 2021. Because these are organization-reported website measures, the stated reporting period matters when comparing them with later annual reports.

The Academy’s FY2023 report recorded more than 52 million Poets.org page views. The site published more than 1,000 poems, added hundreds of audio clips of poets reading their work, and added hundreds of new biographies. It also added 38 original K–12 lesson plans. The site’s homepage was visited 1,338,000 times during FY2023, and the Poem-a-Day landing page was visited nearly 362,000 times.

Poem-a-Day had nearly 332,000 subscribers in FY2023, with subscriber growth of 3.4% year over year. The program published 260 new poems during that fiscal year. These figures describe a recurring digital poetry service rather than one-time page visits.

The Academy’s FY2024 report provides another set of annual digital measures. Poets.org recorded 48 million page views, while the homepage was visited 1.2 million times. The Poem-a-Day landing page received more than 461,000 visits, and Poem-a-Day had nearly 332,000 subscribers. The Poem-a-Day podcast had over 930,000 downloads in FY2024.

Poetry Foundation digital audience statistics

The Poetry Foundation reported 48.7 million active users on PoetryFoundation.org in 2024 and 4.1 million average monthly website visits. Its online archive held 48,841 poems, and the foundation added 830 poems during the year. It also added or updated 364 poet biographies and published 35 web features.

The foundation’s digital distribution extended beyond the website. Poetry Foundation social channels had 1,125,614 followers in 2024 and generated 2,016,176 video views. Social posts generated 141,157 clicks to PoetryFoundation.org. The Poetry Magazine app had 33,536 users, while the Poem of the Day service had 65,767 subscribers and the weekly combined Poetry Foundation Newsletter had 46,051 subscribers.

The same 2024 report counted 306 new audio poems and 613,564 listeners for Audio Poem of the Day. Across five Poetry Foundation podcasts, there were 1,044,747 episode listeners. These measures use different units—listeners, episode listeners, followers, visits, and views—so they should not be added together.

Podcasts, audio, and video engagement

Audio and video give online poetry audiences ways to hear a poem performed or discussed. The Academy of American Poets’ FY2023 report recorded 935,314 downloads for the Poem-a-Day podcast. Its YouTube channel earned 182,213 views and more than 13,000 hours of video watched during that fiscal year.

In FY2024, the Academy’s YouTube channel had 218,616 views and more than 13,100 hours of viewing. The Jane Hirschfield Blaney Lecture garnered 10,500 views. The Academy also reported close to 125,000 Dear Poet video views and more than 2,400 Dear Poet letters in FY2024.

Poetry Foundation’s 2024 audio figures provide a separate view of listening activity: 613,564 listeners for Audio Poem of the Day, 1,044,747 episode listeners across five podcasts, and 377 audio poems published by Poetry magazine. The magazine also published 502 poems and 288 poets in 2024.

Online events were another measurable channel. The Academy reported that its Online Poetry Readings, Conversations & Lecture events were attended by more than 15,000 individuals in FY2023. This is an attendance count for named online events, not a unique-person count across all Academy platforms.

Online publishing and educational reach

Digital poetry statistics also show how much material is being created and how audiences connect with it. In FY2023, the Academy published more than 1,000 poems on Poets.org, added hundreds of audio clips and hundreds of biographies, and produced 38 original K–12 lesson plans. Nearly 1,100 students from 20 states participated in Dear Poet during that fiscal year. The Academy shared resources with 39,590 Teach This Poem subscribers in June 2023.

The Poetry Foundation reported 830 additions to its poem archive in 2024, alongside 364 added or updated poet biographies and 35 web features. Its Poetry Off the Shelf podcast had 26 guests. The foundation’s magazine published 502 poems, 288 poets, 377 audio poems, and 49 prose pieces in 2024.

The magazine’s submission and payment figures describe the scale of the publishing ecosystem behind some online poetry content. Poetry magazine received 19,959 submissions and paid $336,954 to poets in 2024. Of the 288 poets published, 155 were first-time contributors, representing 54% of the poets published. The magazine also had 21,500 print subscribers in 2024, a print measure that provides context but is not an online audience count.

The Academy distributed more than 85,000 copies of the National Poetry Month poster in FY2023 and 70,000 copies in FY2024. These distribution figures are offline or physical-material measures, while the lesson plans, subscriber counts, web visits, downloads, and video views represent distinct digital pathways into poetry.
